The French territory of New Caledonia in the Pacific signed a strategic partnership with the European Union on Tuesday, paving the way to new markets and investment for its struggling nickel industry. The agreement aims to bring producers closer to European supply chains, although funding and industrial projects are yet to be secured.
The memorandum of understanding, signed in New Caledonia's capital Nouméa, sets out cooperation on raw materials, cleaner production and investment, as Brussels seeks to diversify the supply of minerals essential to European industry.
