New cafes, bars, restaurants and things to do opening in and around Nottingham later this year

Food and drink lovers on the hunt for something different have plenty to look forward to in 2022.

As well as all the old favourites, there's going to be a raft of new spots to visit in and around Nottingham.

New cafes, restaurants, and bars, with something for all tastes, are set to open their doors over the next few months.

Here's what there is to look forward to:

The Caribbean Plate

A world of flavour awaits at the new eatery bringing tropical vibes to Stapleford.

The Caribbean Plate owners told Nottinghamshire Live: "It will be a restaurant and takeaway and we will be offering fresh Caribbean food, cooked daily, using traditional recipes passed through generations."

On the menu will be mutton soup, curried mutton, brown stew chicken, and ackee and saltfish.

And of course, the signature flavour of the sunny islands - jerk - will be spicing up chicken, fish, prawns and lamb chops.

It will be opening at what used to be Bel Paese, a cosy little Italian restaurant, in Nottingham Road, which has been closed for a number of years.

The Caribbean Plate hopes to be open within the next couple of weeks "providing everyone runs smoothly."

Wingstop

It's all about chicken at a new fast food outlet coming to the Cornerhouse in Nottingham city centre.

The American chain was founded in the US in 1994 and by 2002 had served one billion wings.

Wingstop has 18 outlets across the UK and Nottingham is next on its list.

Wings and the boneless alternative come in eight, ten or 12 pieces with a heat scale from zero to spicy hero.

Choose from garlic parmesan or lemon pepper at the mild end or blow-your-head-off "the hottest we've got" Atomic at the other end of the spectrum.

Chicken tenders are also on the menu and customers can have them in a burger with crunchy slaw, pickle, house ranch and a toasted brioche bun.

Wingstop will be opening in the former Pizza Hut restaurant.

Canal Turn

2022 is set to be a big year for the former MasterChef: The Professionals' champion Laurence Henry.

The 2018 star has proved himself a winner, whatever he turns his hand to in the kitchen, whether it's fine dining, burgers, bao buns or chicken wings.

Since his triumph, the former sous chef at Restaurant Sat Bains has brought a touch of class to Nottingham's Playa beach club, he has cooked for visitors to Nottinghamshire Hospice and worked alongside butcher Johnny Pusztai to create a gourmet burger.

The Mapperley chef will be the chef patron at Canal Turn - a stunning new purpose-built restaurant space at the Island Quarter site between London Road and Manvers Street.

Laurence will operate and oversee the food offering at Canal Turn – which will have venues spanning three storeys.

Each level will offer something unique, allowing Laurence to showcase the culinary skills which wowed the MasterChef judges.

It is due to open in the spring.

Barista Lab

It once was shoe shop, Dune, but now the empty property is to become Barista Lab.

Details are very sketchy, other than a sign in the window of the premises in Bridlesmith Gate, the pedestrian area that's home to Nottingham's designer shops Hugo Boss, Ted Baker and Kurt Geiger.

It's very early days so there's no opening date or clues of the exact offering but one things for sure, there's going to be some top class speciality coffee.

Bronte & Co

Big Turkish breakfasts and cakes will be on the menu when the new restaurant opens its doors in Sherwood.

And it shouldn't be too long now, with its debut just weeks away.

The rustically-designed eatery boasts an all-weather outdoor seating area with a retractable roof, so visitors can enjoy the sun and be protected from the rain.

The new venture, in Mansfield Road, had been due to open in December but work was pushed back to due to import delays.

Gong Cha

A tea shop with a difference is heading to Nottingham's oldest shopping arcade, the Exchange in the heart of the city centre.

Taiwanese franchise Gong cha specialises in bubble tea or boba tea. Call it what you like but don't expect an English breakfast tea here.

The oriental favourite, which claims "brewing happiness", has many combinations of different flavours, toppings, milk foam and the signature tapioca pearls.

Gong cha refers to the act of offering tea to the emperor as a form of tribute in ancient China.

"At our stores, we greet everyone warmly and sincerely to create happiness not only in every cup, but in every heart," they say.

The Mixologist

The Mixologist is a new cocktail bar serving "great food" on the first floor of Nottingham's Cornerhouse.

The bar will be taking over the former Chiquito restaurant, which closed during the pandemic.

Little has been revealed so far by the owners but they have said: "Experience nights out like never before - we can’t wait to open our doors to you to bring some amazing food and drinks and above all fantastic music with live DJs and events."

Axed

The third new venue to open at the Cornerhouse will be an axe-throwing attraction.

Axed promises the UK’s only interactive smart lanes with touchscreen technology powering a projected target system.

With a host of interactive games and competitions to entertain any group, it’s unlike any other experiences, according to the founders.

Sessions will be hosted by fully trained instructors, with 60 minutes throwing time on a lane.

The contemporary venue, on the second floor of the Cornerhouse in Burton Street, is set to open in April.

It will have a VIP tiered seating area and a bar, serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks - but only post chucking for safety reasons.
