New body cam footage shows final moments before police kill 1-year-old

  • A Mississippi police officer will face no criminal charges in the fatal shooting of one-year-old Kohen Wiley, state officials announced Monday. The shooting occurred on June 14 in Senatobia, Mississippi, after officers responded to a shoplifting call at a Walmart involving the child's mother.
  • Body-camera footage published by a local news outlet, Darkhorse Press, on Tuesday is from the perspective of two officers who responded to the scene in June but not from the officer who fired. The video is not the entirety of the police response, nor does it clearly show Kohen, his mother, or the other woman driving the car.
  • The footage begins from the perspective of an unknown officer rushing toward a gray sedan. The sedan is reversing and hits a parked SUV as officers are approaching, yelling at the driver to stop.
  • When the sedan moves forward, at least one officer appears to be in front of the passenger side, with a second officer standing close to the driver’s side, both with guns drawn. As the vehicle approaches them, at least one of the officers opens fire. The officer appears to fire three more times while standing to the side of the vehicle.
  • The public has yet to see more video of the incident. Kohen’s family is going to view it Thursday morning. The toddler’s grandmother, Veronica Roberson, said officials had informed the family that the footage included surveillance videos from Walmart, along with five body-worn cameras. The attorney general's decision follows months of community mourning and widespread calls for justice.
