The new Alliance Lord Mayor of Belfast has opened up his introductory address by speaking in Irish to the chamber.
At the monthly full meeting of Belfast City Council on Monday (May 9), Alliance Party Councillor Michael Long, the husband of party leader Naomi Long, introduced himself as the new mayor by saying “I am delighted to be the new Lord Mayor for Belfast” in Gaeilge.
Mr Long will only be mayor for three weeks, after the previous mayor Kate Nicholl, was elected an Alliance MLA to the Stormont Assembly. Her time in the office was due to end on June 1.
