The Chicago Bears have bolstered their running back group through the first wave of free agency. Following the departure of David Montgomery, Chicago added two new faces in D’Onta Foreman and Travis Homer to join Khalil Herbert.
Herbert is coming off an impressive first season in Luke Getsy’s offense, where he rushed for 731 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per carry, the most among qualifying running backs in the NFL in 2022.
And while it looks like Herbert is poised to step into a bigger role following Montgomery’s departure, Foreman is coming to the Bears with the mindset that he’s going to “be the guy.”
“I can’t really speak for the coaches and the plan that they have,” Foreman said, via NFL.com. “I came here to try to be the guy. If I didn’t come here with that mentality, I would be doing myself a disservice. I think I would be doing the team a disservice. All do respect, humble confidence, I’m not trying to make it seem like anything other than exactly what it is. That’s just me being confident in myself and feeling like I could come in and be the guy. And also be a guy that people count on, and I can help us win. I didn’t come here to take a back seat to anybody.”
Chicago is once again going with the running back by committee approach, which worked well last season. The Bears had the best rushing offense in the NFL for most of the year, where Montgomery, Herbert and quarterback Justin Fields all split the load.
Now, it certainly appears that Chicago has three solid running backs to utilize, as well as the NFL’s most dangerous rushing quarterback in Fields.
