India is preparing to expand its ability to overhaul its ageing battle tanks by decoding decades-old Soviet engineering drawings, many of which are written in Russian. The effort is underway at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ), where engineers are reconstructing the technical knowledge needed to dismantle, repair and rebuild tanks used by the Indian Army, a TOI report stated. Working with the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) in Avadi, Tamil Nadu, VFJ has deciphered nearly 70% of the old drawings for specialised fixtures required during tank overhauls. Where original designs are missing, Indian engineers are developing their own solutions. The target is ambitious. VFJ aims to overhaul 80 Army tanks every year from April 2028, establishing Jabalpur as a second major tank overhaul centre alongside Avadi.
