Ayr's new police station will have 'no cells', Ayrshire Live can reveal.
Cops making arrests in the town will have to ferry crooks to other main custody centres which serve Ayrshire, with their new HQ in Newton House not able to facilitate cells.
Criminals could be taken along the road to Kilmarnock or Saltcoats, or they could be sent an incredible 50 miles down the A77 to the other holding dock used by Ayrshire's force in Stranraer.
Officers made the official move across the town today after 50 years spent at King Street.
Around 200 officers and staff will now be housed in the South Ayrshire Council offices in nearby Green Street Lane.
Chief Inspector Kevin Lammie insists that the absence of cells will have "no impact" on policing, with cells in Ayr lying dormant "for some time."
Area Commander for South Ayrshire, Chief Inspector Kevin Lammie, said: “There are no cells at Newton House, however there will be no impact on operational policing as the main custody centres for Ayrshire are located within Kilmarnock, Saltcoats and Stranraer Police Stations, and have been for some time.
“Newton House provides a far improved working environment for officers and staff and reduces our carbon footprint, while facilitating greater partnership working to better meet the needs of policing in our community.
“Local engagement with Elected Members has been positive as the move will continue to see a high standard of service being maintained in Ayr and the surrounding area.”
