A new abortion clinic is set to come to the Northern Quarter this summer, the latest planning documents show.
The National Unplanned Pregnancy Advisory Service (NUPAS) is applying for planning permission to use a commercial unit on Newton Street as a clinic, in the street’s Sorting House building.
NUPAS currently operates across England, and it has five sites across Greater Manchester. They include another city centre location on Lever Street, and in Bolton, Bury, Stockport, and Oldham.

“We are applying for change of use [of the premises] to enable us to provide the following services,” Aaron Flaherty, NUPAS’ chief executive, told the Manchester Evening News . “Consultation in relation to unplanned pregnancy, early medical termination of pregnancy, sexual health screening, and provision of all forms of contraception.
“Offering these essential services from this location, as well as our multiple community based locations will enhance access to these important services for all residents of Greater Manchester. We’re hoping for June 2023, subject to approval from regulators.”
All NUPAS clinical services are overseen by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Its latest report into a Greater Manchester site gave the Stockport location a ‘good’ rating in 2019.
You can view the planning application on Manchester City Council’s website.
