Concern amid new 4am closing time plans for venue on site of former Ten Streets Market

Plans to revive a popular market and events space to the north of Liverpool city centre will be discussed at a planning meeting amid concern for late opening hours.

Liverpool Council will hear an application for a premises licence for a venue on the site of the Ten Streets Market , in Cotton Street, later this month. The mother and daughter team which brought the original market to life in 2018 confirmed last year they were closing saying they were proud of what they have achieved.

However, new plans have been put forward that could bring the venue back to life, with hopes it could stay open until past 4am. The application, lodged by Joseph Burns, seeks permission to sell alcohol from 10am daily until a terminal hour of 4am, closing 30 minutes later.

The plans would also see the venue stage indoor sporting events, including boxing and wrestling, from 8am until 4am. A written representation was submitted alongside the plans from Kirkdale councillor Dave Hanratty who said he had received concerns from residents about the late-night licence.

He said: “The application for late-night operation during the week and weekend is concerning as this falls within an inaccessible part of the city without any access to any form of public transport or the lack of availability of late-night taxis. This will inevitably create tensions and potential disorder on patrons exiting and congregating in and around these premises for significant periods.”

Further representations have been made by residents including one who wrote to the local authority to say they strongly oppose the plans “due to the level of nuisance it will cause us the residents of this street”. The note added: “No one should be allowed to play that amount of loud music anywhere, let alone in a street where people live and in an uninsulated warehouse with a gigantic door that opens into a street.

“I have lived here for 10 years and I know the area is changing but this proposal is a step too far at the moment, it would render my home unliveable.” Another city centre venue could also be reimagined with proposals lodged with the city council for a new premises licence at the former Boujee venue at Liverpool ONE.

An application has been put in for a licence for a restaurant and bar to serve alcohol until 3am Friday and Saturday and 2am Sunday to Thursday. The venue would seek to open from midday every day, closing at 2am Sunday to Thursday and 3am Friday and Saturday.

The Ten Streets Market plans will be heard by Liverpool Council’s licensing and gambling sub-committee on Monday February 20, while comments can be made online regarding the Boujee plans until February 25.
