Match report: Nick Ames’s copy from Berlin has landed!

Austria celebrate: Ralf Rangnick and his players milk the applause of their rapturous fans after yet another terrific performance. They are going to take some beating in this competition.

Elsewhere in Group D: It’s finished one apiece betweeen France and Poland, which means Kylian Mbappe and chums finish second in the group. The Netherlands go through in third place and could face England.

Full time: The Netherlands 2-3 Austria

It’s all over in Berlin! Despite coming from behind twice, the Netherlands come a cropper against this outstanding Austria side. They were excellent in and out of possession and taske all three points courtesy of an early Donyell Malen own goal and second half strikes from Romano Schmidd and Marcel Sabitzer.

Austria have won!

It’s all over! Ralf Rangnick’s side win a fantastic match and the group.

Updated

90+7 min: Gakpo runs on to a Van Dijk header from midfield but then loses the ball in the Austria penalty area.

90+6 min: The Netherlands advance again and Van Dijk gets the ball launched upfield. Wout Weghorst stretches every sinew but is unable to keep it in play.

90+5 min: On as an Austria sub, Leopold Querfeld needs treatment for what looks like a cut on his leg. The Netherlands have a corner and from it they win another one.

90+3 min: Correction: Stefan De Vrij is still on the pitch. It was Tijani Reijnders who was substituted earlier.

90+2 min: Schmidd tries to pick out Posch with a ball into Dutch territory but overhits his pass. It’s Schmidd’s last act of an otherwise excellent performance – he’s replaced by Andy Weimann.

90+1 min: We’re into six minutes of added time.

89 min: The Dutch sling the ball into the Austria box again and Depay wins the header. He can’t knock the ball in the direction of Weghorst.

88 min: Virgil van Dijk plays the ball foreward, trying to pick out Wegjorst, who was instrumental in helping to win the ball before Depay scored the Netherlands’ excellent second goal. It was an extremely tidy finish but it seems a long time ago now.

86 min: Austria attack once again, with Stefan Posch on the ball as the clock ticks down. Elsewhere in this group, France are being held by Poland in a game where Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski have each scored penalties.

85 min: Verbruggen narrowly avoids the embarrassment of being punished at his near post twice in as many minutes, with the linesman coming to his rescue. It was the correct decision.

84 min: Baumgartner has the ball in the net, slipping it past Verbruggen at his near post from the byline. He’s offside.

82 min: This has been some game! An absolute classic but the Netherlands have made things quite easy for Austria. They’re way too open!

GOAL! Netherlands 2-3 Austria (Sabitzer 81)

Austria are back in front! Marcel Sabitzer rifles home from a tight angle after creeping in behind Schouten to run on to a pass slipped his way.

Updated

79 min: Austria substitution: Michael Gregoritsch is on for Arnautovic, who’s had a quiet evening.

The goal stands!!!

77 min: The ref disallowed the goal for what he saw as a handball but he wasmistaken. There was no handball – it hit Depay’s chest and then he lifted a volley over Pentz. The ref goes to his pitchside moniter, has a look at the replay and awards the goal.

GOAL! Netherlands 2-2 Austria (Depay 76)

The Dutch equalise! Depay lifts the ball over Pentz after Weghorst had won possession when a cross sailed into the box. There’s a VAR check for a potential handball.

Updated

73 min: Xavi Simons spots Patrick Pentz wandering out of his goal and tries to catchthe Austrian keeper out with an audacious shot from distance. It’s not audacious enough and the ball sails well wide.

72 min: Depay sends a free-kick from the left into the Austria penalty area, trying to pick out Weghorst. Not for the first time this evening, his dead ball delivery is poor.

70 min: Donyell Malen is fouled by Alexander Prass and signals to the bench that he needs to come off with cramp. Wout Weghorst will replace him.

69 min: Romano Schmidd dispossesses Reinders with an excellent tackle, one of several he’s made in this game.

66 min: Some Netherlands substitutions to report: Micky van de Ven and Gini Wijnaldum come on for Nathan Ake and Stefan De Vrij.

63 min: Patrick Wimmer goes off, having been somewhat fortunate not to get a second yellow card for a naughty challenge moments before that goal was scored. Philipp Lienhart also makes way so Christoph Baumgartner and Konrad Lainer can come on.

61 min: Austria attacked down the left with Patrick Wimmer on the ball. He played it to Florian Grillitsch on the byline and the Austria No10’s cross was inch-perfect. Schmidd’s bullet-header from 12 yards was going in anyway but De Vrij, standing at the post, helped the ball along its way.

GOAL! Netherlands 1-2 Austria (Schmid 59)

Austria retake the lead. It’s a powerful and precise header from Romano Schmid that’s deflected in by Stefan De Vrij.

Updated

57 min: The Netherlands win a free-kick wide on the right. Depay picks out Stefan De Vrij, who skims a header wide from just inside the Austria penalty area.

55 min: Play resumes after Pentz has one of his wrists looked at. He’s well enough to launch the ball upfield from the edge of his six-yard box.

54 min: From the corner, Virgil van Dijk has a header deflected over the bar for another set-piece. There’s a break in play so Austria goalkeeperPatrick Pentz can get treatment for an injury.

52 min: Nathan Ake takes a throw-in down by the halfway line and it’s put out for another one. The Manchester City defender takes that throw-in too. The Dutch advance upfield and win a corner after good work by Malen.

50 min: One suspects Ronaldo Koeman tore into his players at half-time, because they’ve seriously upped their game since the break.

48 min: The Dutch roar out of the traps in this second half. Xavi Simons slipped the ball inside to Cody Gakpo sas they attacked on the break after an excellent tackle by Geertruida. With a three-on-two, Cakpo cut in from the right, opened his body and curled a beauty around Patrick Penz in the Austria goal.

GOAL! Netherlands 1-1 Austria (Gakpo 47)

The Netherlands equalise! So much for Austria changing their approach!

Updated

Second half: Netherlands 0-1 Austria

46 min: Play resumes with the Dutch on the ball. Somewhat surprisingly, Ronald Koeman hasn’t made any more changes. It will be interesting to see if Austria change their approach in this half and elect to sit back and try to protect what they have.

Elsewhere in Group D: It’s scoreless between France and Poland at the break and you can follow that particular game with Scott Murray …

The Netherlands: Ronald Koeman’s side has been very ponderous but they should have equalised only for Donyell Malen to sidefoot a glorious chance to atone for his earlier error wide of the post. Marko Arnautovic missed an even more inviting opportunity to double Austria’s lead, failing to connect properly with the ball when it dropped at his feet six yards out.

Updated

Half-time: Netherlands 0-1 Austria

Peep! It’s half-time and Austria go in at the break with a one-goal lead that they thoroughly deserve. Donyell Malen shanked the ball into his own net early in the game after connecting with an excellent Alexander Prass cross from the left.

45 min: Florian Grillitsch is given all the time in the world to ping the ball out wide to Stefan Posch on the right touchline under no pressure whatsoever. A visibly angry Virgil van Dijk roars at Tijani Reijnders and Jerdy Schouten, telling his midfielders to get their fingers out.

43 min: Romano Schmid canters up the right flank for Austria but a poor touch lets him down and he gifts possession back to the Netherlands.

42 min: The Dutch have finally perked up. Depay is penalised for a tight offside as he tries to sprint on to a low pass in behind the Austrian defence from deep.

41 min: Posch, who is on a yellow card, fouls Cody Gakpo but avoids a second booking. It was a genuine attempt to play the ball. Depay fires the free-kick from a good position straight into the Austria wall.

39 min: I’m not sure that goal would have stood if Arnautovic had scored, as the ref had accidentally taken out Depay in the build-up and the Dutch No10 was lying on the pitch hurt.

38 min: Bart Verbruggen gets down well to save a long-range effort from Sabitzer. In the ensuing scramble, Mark Arnautovic somehow contrives to miss a sitter from about eight yards. He failed to connect properly with the ball as it dropped at his feet and sent a weak effort straight at Verbruggen.

Updated

36 min: It looks like Cody Gakpo will take up a position on the left, with Simons playing in a more centrasl role than usual. Tisani Reijnders is dropping a little deeper in the Dutch midfield.

35 min: Dutch substitution: Joey Veerman is replaced by Xavi Simons. It’s not a like for like substitution so it will be interesting to see hoow Koeman shuffles his pack out on the pitch. It’s time for a drinks break.

33 min: Patrick Wimmer catches Lutsharel Geertruid on his instep with a late challenge and gets booked. He’ll miss Austria’s next game.

31 min: The referee, Ivan Kruzliak, brandishes his yellow card in the direction of Stefan Posch, who had caught Memphis Depay with a late challlenge. Depay is probably the only Dutch player who is having a good game.

30 min: A Marcel Sabitzer shot from distance cannons off a Dutch defender and Austria’s fans appeal optimistically for a penalty. None is forthcoming.

28 min: Austria continue to hog the ball, their centre-half Phillipp Lienhart making plenty of runs deep into Dutch territory with the ball at his feet. When he goes upfield, Wober stays back and vice-versa. “He’s silky, he’s elegant on the ball,” says Danny Murphy on BBC co-comms.

27 min: From that corner, the Dutch win a throw-in but lose the ball again when Lutsharel Geertruida misplaces a pass upfield towards Malen. We can’t blame Donyell for that one!

25 min: Donyell Malen didn’t hit that shot with any kind of conviction and it would be no great surprise to see him substituted sooner rather than later. He does better now, winning a corner for his team after taking on Patrick Wimmer down the right.

23 min: Oh dear. Memphis Depay picks out Reijnders with a cushioned pass and the midfielder plays Donyell Malen in behind the Austria defence. With only Patrick Pentz to beat, the winger sidefoots the ball wide of the upright. That’s a shocking miss from a player who is having a nightmare.

22 min: Austria midfielder Florian Grillitsch is penalised for a foul and the Dutch get the ball back. As things stand, they’re third in Group D.

21 min: The Netherlands play the ball out from the back, enjoying some rare time on the ball until Marko Arnautocvic wins it back for Austria.

19 min: Austria continue to play through the Dutch lines, their fans raucously cheering each and every pass as their players give the men in orange the runaround. They look so comfortable on the ball.

18 min: Malen gets on the ball, advances towards the Austria penalty area and is forced backwards.

16 min: Alexander Prass goes on another run down the wing, right under the nose of Ronald Koeman, who needs to have a word with Donyell Malen. The Netherlands winger is giving the full-back number the freedom of the left flank.

Updated

15 min: On the back of good work by Depay, Cody Gakpo squares the ball into the Austria penalty area and Tisani Rijnders sidefoots the ball wide. It was an outstanding chance but the Dutch midfielder couldn’t sort his feet out quickly enough.

13 min: Stefan Posch is upended by Cody Gakpo, who concedes a free-kick out by the right touchline, halfway inside the Austria half. The ball is launched upfield and Stefan De Vrij heads clear.

12 min: Max Wober tries to release Alexander Prass down the left flank again but overhits his pass on this occasion.

10 min: The Netherlands have been sitting too deep, they keep giving the ball away and now they’re a goal down. Ronald Koeman will be furious with his players, who are not performing at all well.

8 min: Austria continue to boss proceedings, their tails up after scoring that goal. Malen, the Dutch right winger, should have been tracking Prass’s run up the flank but instead found himself in the penalty area, prodding the ball past his own goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen after his man had drilled it into the box.

GOAL! Netherlands 0-1 Austria (Malen 5og)

Austria are in front! Prass sends another good cross into the Dutch penalty area, where Donyell Malen lunges and sends the ball into his own net. It’s another Euro 2024 own goal and another early strike for Austria.

Updated

5 min: Memphis Depay almost catches Philipp Lienhart napping with the ball at his feet in front of his own goal. The Austrian defender manages to get the ball away before disaster strikes.

4 min: The Dutch seem to be asleep and concede a couple of throw-ins on the right side of the pitch. Austria full-back Stefan Posch chucks the ball back into play.

2 min: Austria continue to dominate possession in these very early stages. Wober plays Alexander Prass up the left wing and is cross is superb. It’s begging to be poked home but there’s nobody on hand to get on the end of the delivery. Austria should be in front.

Netherlands v Austrias is go ...

1 min: Austria get the ball rolling, and immediately give it away. They win it back again and Max Wober plays it to his goalkeeper, Patrick Pentz, who’ll be glad of the early touch.

Not long now: Slovakian referee Ivan Kruzliak and his assistants led out the players of both sides, with Virgil van Dijk and Marko Arnautovic wearing the captains’ armbands. As the national anthems get under way, here’s hoping for another good game in what has been a largely excellent tournament.

Fun fact: It was 36 years ago to the day that the Netherlands won the Euros, beating the former Soviet Union in the final in Munich. It remains the Dutch team’s only major tournament success.

Updated

Those teams: There are seven changes across both teams, with Ronald Koeman bringing in full-back Lutsharel Geertruida, who I must confess I have never heard of before. Joey Veerman and Donyell Malen also come into the Dutch side. Max Wober, Romano Schmid, Alexander Prass and Patrick Wimmer all start for Austria.

Group D permutations

The Netherlands and France are both guaranteed a place in the knockout stages already and Ronald Koeman’s side will finish in the top two if they avoid defeat today. They will win the group if they beat Austria and get a better result than France achieve against Poland, who cannot qualify for the last 16.

France will finish in the top two if they avoid defeat against Poland, and will top the group of they win and the Netherlands don’t beat Austria. If France and the Netherlands both win, the winner of the group will will be decided on goal difference and then goals scored, as their head-to-head is level.

Austria are guaranteed third place in Group D but can finish in the top two if they win today. Even if they lose against the Netherlands, they will still advance to the knockout stages unless the margin of defeat is four or more goals.

Group D: Netherlands v Austria

We’ll get to the nitty-gritty of the permutations shortly but suffice to say, for the time being, that the Netherlands are already guaranteed their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 and Austria will definitely join them unless they lose by four or more goals this evening.

Such a margin of defeat seems extremely unlikely for Ralf Rangnick’s side, who have impressed both in defeat at the hands of France and victory over Poland. They will fancy their chances of beating a Dutch side who have taken four points from their opening two games. Kick-off in the Leipzig Stadium is at 5pm (BST) but we’ll have team news and build-up in the meantime.
