In addition to this, the premium tier will go up by £2 taking it to a new fee of £15.99 per month.

In Ireland, the basic plan will increase by one euro and two euro for the Standard and Premium tiers, respectively.

This will see people say £12 to £24 more each year.

Netflix said that the change in price will allow the company to "continue investing in best in class UK productions" in a bid to "offer a wide variety of curated quality shows and films" to customers.

A Netflix spokesperson said: “We have always been focused on providing our members both quality and clear value for their membership.

“Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalogue, and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry.

“We offer a range of plans so members can choose a price that works best for them.”

The price change is immediate for all new members, while existing members will be notified by email 30 days before they come into effect, depending on their specific billing cycle.

Netflix said the change will come into fore immediately for new members whilst existing customers will be told at least 30 days before they are set to be charged.

People have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts with one saying "Now that Netflix are going to gouge us with price hikes think it's time to end my subscription and look for a cheaper maybe even better streaming service."

Another added: "Do you not think its a bad time for a price increase? Given all the competition & that basic costs of food & electricity have risen, you might risk being 1st on the chopping block of expenses that can be cut."
