Netflix has announced that Wednesday has broken the streaming record set by the fourth season of Stranger Things.
The Addams’s Family spin-off led by Jenna Ortega had a staggering 341.2 million viewing hours in the first week on the platform.
Tim Burton’s new series about the gothic teen Wednesday as she starts boarding school at the infamous Nevermore Academy, is also the number one show in 83 countries, tying the record set by the science-fiction series.
Netflix took to Twitter to share the news on Tuesday and wrote: “Wednesday now holds the record for most hours viewed in a week for an English-language series on Netflix, with 341.2 MILLION HOURS!”
“The series — starring Jenna Ortega from EPs Tim Burton, Al Gough & Miles Millar — is #1 in 83 countries, tying the record set by Stranger Things 4.”
The show soared to the top spot on the streaming platform, surpassing new instalments of other hit shows such as The Crown and Dead to Me that were also released this month.
Wednesday sees Jenna at the heart of Addams’ family, supported by Catherine Zeta-Jones as the iconic Morticia, Luis Guzmán as her husband Gomez, alongside Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley.
There is also a cameo from Christina Ricci who played the original Wednesday Addams in the 1991 movie, The Addams Family.
The now grown-up Christina appears briefly as one of Nevermore’s teachers, Miss Thornhill, as a nod to the early 90s classic.
The success of the first season of Wednesday means that it is possible this spooky family could return in another instalment.
However, the writers and producers have hinted that the focus might not be solely on Wednesday, but the wider world and family.
In an interview with Empire, Alfred Gough the co-creator and executive producer of the series teased: “[Screenwriter] Miles Millar and I are talking amongst ourselves about it. There's definitely more that you can explore in the world of the Addamses.”
