The final season of The Crown is set to pay tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II by welcoming back all three actresses who have played her in the smash hit Netflix show. Claire Foy, Olivia Colman and Imelda Staunton will also be joined by newcomer Viola Prettejohn, who will reportedly play an even younger Elizabeth.
New scenes have been shot by all of the show’s former actresses, The Sun reports. Each actress has played the late monarch at different stage of her reign.
A TV insider told the publication that the idea was likely to have been hatched around the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s death last September. They said: “Netflix are playing a clever hand with these four queens, bringing the story of Her Majesty to a sensational end after telling virtually all of her life story over 60 episodes.” What are your thoughts on the show? The insider continued: “It also indicates the respect and affection which the creators have for the late monarch, even though they might not feel the same way about the royals as an institution. The idea would most likely have been devised last year, around the time that the Queen passed away, as a way of paying tribute to her. Each actress who has played The Queen has received huge praise from viewers and critics. Claire Foy, who originated the role during the first series of The Crown in 2016, won an Emmy Award for her performance. The current actress to play the role, Imelda Staunton, was nominated for a BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress earlier this year.
The Crown is available to watch on Netflix. The sixth and final season is set to release on the streaming platform later this year.
