Netflix’s Squid Game spin-off show to feature celebs against the public in cruel twist

Netflix hit Squid Games has revealed its upcoming spin-off will see celebrities fight it out against members of the public in intense challenges, not unlike the hit drama series.

The spin off, titled Squid Game: The Challenge, is expected to air next year and coincide with the second series of the South Korean drama series. The original series aired in 2021 and was an instant hit with 1.65 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days - one of Netflix's highest ever results.

The new reality style TV spin off will see celebrities competing, and some big names have already signed up for the intense competition.

Plans for the new series were announced earlier this year by Netflix, but the cruel and unusual twist has only just been announced.

A TV insider speaking to The Sun said: "Fans are likely to be whipped into a total frenzy by these fresh revelations. It was thrilling enough to think they would see ordinary people attempting the tasks — though obviously no one will be hurt or killed attempting them.

"But the idea that celebs will be among those taking part adds a whole new dimension to the concept.

"Now all the talk will be around what other stars will be signing up for the show over the coming weeks."

The series is already expected to be another stellar hit for Netflix, after the global success of the first Squid Game series last year. And viewers will be treated to a cast of star-studded celebs, with one of the first famous faces set to sign up being former Celebrity Big Brother star Perez Hilton.

The spin off is expected to air at the same time as the second series of the drama (Netflix)

The original drama saw hundreds of desperate and financially struggling people risk their lives competing in deadly games as they all aimed to win a life-changing cash prize. The more competitors that died or left the game, the bigger the prize became.

The spin off series is expected to follow suit with an initial group of 456 players who will battle it out to get their hands on a potential prize of £3.8million over ten episodes.

The series is set to be filmed in the UK, with an expected air date of next year although Netflix has not confirmed the official live date.
