Netflix's Harry and Meghan documentary features Liverpool ECHO front page

A front page of the Liverpool ECHO unrelated to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle features in the couple's Netflix documentary.

The second episode of the documentary series speaks about the press coverage of Meghan's background. It shows some of the headlines in the UK tabloid press ahead of Kensington Palace's statement on the media's treatment of the Duchess of Sussex.

In one segment, James Holt, the executive director of the Archewell Foundation and former palace spokesman shared his opinions about the British media. He said: "The UK tabloids have a very unique role to play in British life. On one hand, they have a real sensationalised element that loves the gossip.

"But equally, it's not just entertainment because the tabloids have been arbiters of public opinion for such a long time." As Mr Holt speaks, what appears to be stock footage of newspapers plays over.

During his voiceover about papers "loving the gossip" and controlling "public opinion", a clip of the Liverpool ECHO's front page appears. The ECHO paper shown dates back to April 27 2016. It features a picture of St George's Hall lit up in red, with a banner reading 'Truth and Justice' overlaid with the names of the initial 96 people who died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster.

The image of St George's Hall was where a commemoration had been held on the previous day, April 26, to mark the outcome of the Hillsborough inquest verdicts. In the clip, the ECHO's headline 'Angels and Demons' can be seen, along with the box-out which reads: "Heroes fought for justice and at last a city is vindicated. Now the pressure mounts on the cowards and the liars."

The Liverpool ECHO has contacted Netflix for comment.

The Netflix series 'Harry & Meghan' has previously been criticised in some quarters for appearing to use footage of the press filming events unrelated to the couple to depict how they were hounded by the paparazzi.

Ahead of the series launch, the one-minute teaser was released on Monday and shows the couple attending public events as well as private behind-the-scenes moments. In one section of the footage, clips of paparazzi are paralleled alongside old footage of Harry's mother, Princess Diana being followed by the media as Harry says in a voiceover: "The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution, this feeding frenzy.

"I was terrified, I didn't want history to repeat itself." However, one of the clips shown to illustrate his words appears to actually be of members of the press awaiting TV star Katie Price arriving outside Crawley Magistrates Court.

Another part of the trailer shows photographers huddling around a car as Meghan says, referring to the royal household, "I realised they are never going to protect you". The clip seems to be of Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen being photographed.
