Netflix 'renews' Heartbreak High after 90s reboot becomes massive global hit

It was big in the 90s, and its spiritual successor is now such a phenomenal success on Netflix the platform has renewed it for a second season, reports claim.

Australia's Heartbreak High, inspired by the iconic series of the same name, rocketed to become the streaming giant's sixth most-streamed show globally, reaching the top ten in 43 countries worldwide.

It was only released last month, and Netflix bosses are very keen to keep the momentum going, reported the Sunday Telegraph.

The show, which is set in an Australian High School, racked up a colossal 18,250,000 hours viewed in just the past week alone.

While us Brits have lapped it up, Heartbreak High has also proved a smash in its native Australia, America and parts of Africa.

The drama had initially come under fire after its diverse cast was deemed as 'too woke' - but any criticism clearly hasn't stood in its way.

Accusations of it being a 'diversity showcase' were prompted by its racially-mixed cast, non-binary and autistic characters.

But its incisive writing and strong storylines have kicked any naysayers firmly to the kerb, with the show winning over a whole legion of fans.

Do you remember the original show back in the 90s?

In case you're unfamiliar with the Heartbreak High of the 90s, it chronicled the tumultuous lives of teens at the fictional Hartley High, in Sydney.

With its relatively hard-hitting plots tackling racism, human rights and other real-life issues, it prided itself on being as true-to-life as possible pre-watershed.

And its winning formula re-packaged for today's youngsters has proved a hit all over again.

Even original Heartbreak High star Salvatore Coco has showered praise on the reboot.

'I thought it was fantastic. There were concerns about it being too 'woke'. But no, it touched on the topics and wasn't in your face,' he said on the TV Blackbox podcast.
