Obsession is the latest drama to land on Netflix. The series, starring Richard Armitage, Charlie Murphy, Indira Varma, Rish Shah and Marion Bailey, is a contemporary adaptation of Josephine Hart's 1991 novel, Damage.
The four-part limited series was released on the streaming service on Thursday, April 13 and has a star-studded cast list. The line-up includes actors from Peaky Blinders, The Crown, The Hobbit and Ms. Marvel, with stars from Gangs of London, Obi WanKenobi and Andor also taking on roles in the drama.
Obsession has been described as a thrilling and seductive series about erotic obsession and forbidden desire. A synopsis reads: "A contemporary adaptation of Josephine Hart's novella, Damage, the story centers around a dangerous love triangle that emerges when the enigmatic Anna Barton embarks on a passionate affair with her fiance's father, William.
"Whilst Anna fights to sustain both relationships, William is drawn into an obsessive spiral. But how long can they keep their secret hidden before someone gets hurt?"
Richard Armitage plays the cheating husband William Farrow in the series. Viewers will recognise Richard from his many roles, including those in The Hobbit, Stay Close, and The Stranger.
Playing the role of a cheating husband left Richard with a constant sense of guilt. He said: "I carried it around like a heavy feeling in my chest. Even in the green room between scenes with Indira (playing my wife, Ingrid) I'd struggle to look her in the eye. I'd think, 'How can you be doing this to someone so wonderful?'"
Richard's character William is a top surgeon who detonates his seemingly perfect life by embarking on an affair with his son’s fiancé, Anna (Charlie Murphy). "I was fascinated by the psychology of what leads a very successful man, with a really good marriage, a great family and, really, nothing wrong in his life, to risk everything," he said.
Charlie Murphy, known for her roles in Halo and as Jessie Eden in Peaky Blinders, plays Anna Barton, a beautiful but damaged young woman who’s living a dangerous double life. She embarks on a taboo-shattering affair with William, who also happens to be the father of her fiancé, Jay. "On the one hand, she’s desperately looking for normality to anchor and heal her and that’s what she gets from Jay, but the destructive side seeks out danger and annihilation and that’s what William represents," Charlie said.
