3 new to Netflix movies to stream this weekend
The Mission: Impossible franchise
Available: US
Surely everyone reading this will have seen at least one, and likely all, of the films in this long-running franchise. Brian De Palma's first film, released all the way back in 1996, starred Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt – a young agent working for the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). It's a solid film, but not hugely representative of what followed.
Over the course of the next seven films, the franchise underwent a dramatic shift, from moody spy flick to increasingly OTT action spectacular. The films got better and more fun, but we'll always have a soft spot for where it all started. Netflix is now screening the first five entries, from the original all the way to 2015's Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Watch Mission: Impossible.
Along Came Polly
Available: US
Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston star in this underrated romantic comedy from 2004. Stiller plays Reuben Feffer, a risk assessment expert who, while on honeymoon with his new wife, Lisa (Debra Messing), catches her with another man. Heartbroken, he returns home and tries to move on with his life. One day, he bumps into an old schoolmate, Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston). As they spend time together, their feelings get stronger, but can the new couple get over their own hang-ups about love and commitment?
Along Came Polly mixes classic rom-com tropes with moments of gross-out humor. Because of that, this won't be for everyone. Give it a chance, though, and you'll find a warm, funny film, with a supporting role from the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Watch Along Came Polly.
American Gangster
Available: US
Ridley Scott is the director behind this terrific crime thriller. It's based on the true story of Californian gangster Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), who smuggled heroin into the USA on service planes during the Vietnam War. As his "Blue Magic" empire grows, however, so does the interest in him from rival gangs and various law enforcement agencies. It's not long before Frank's criminal enterprise starts to look very precarious indeed...
Late period Scott can be... patchy, but this is up there with the director's best work. A terrific film with a compelling lead performance from Washington, and a strong supporting cast that also includes Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Ruby Dee.
Watch American Gangster.
