Netflix has issued an update on the release date of Heartstopper season two. Based on Alice Oseman’s best-selling graphic novels of the same name, the coming-of-age drama follows a friendship between high school students Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) that blossoms into something more.
The series has been praised for its portrayal of LGBTQ+ stories, including trans and bisexual characters and the challenges they face. The first season proved a huge hit when it dropped in April last year and spent five weeks in the streamer’s top 10 shows in the UK.
Fans of the show have been eagerly awaiting news of its return ever since, and on the anniversary of its release on Sunday, Netflix sent fans in a spin when it posted a cryptic tweet hinting that news was coming this week. Now Netflix has confirmed exactly what’s in store for the future of the show.

On Monday (April 24), Netflix confirmed that Heartstopper will return for a second season this summer. Alongside a behind-the-scenes video, the streaming giant said the show will drop on August 3, as lead actors Joe Locke and Kit Connor return for a second outing at Truham Grammar School for Boys.
A synopsis shared by Netflix Tudum reads: “Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship, Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) face unforeseen challenges and Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney) work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.”

Oseman has revealed that the upcoming season is based on Volume three of her graphic novel series – plus some brand-new material. Speaking to Netflix she said: “Season 2 is based on Volume 3, so we had a good foundation. But there’s not enough in the book to take a whole season of TV, so there had to be a lot of creation of new stuff.”
Many familiar faces are returning for season two, including Olivia Coleman as Nick’s mum, Rhea Norwood as Imogen, Tobie Donovan as Isaac, and Sebastian Croft as Ben. The show has also added some new cast members, including Bel Priestley and Ash Self as Naomi and Felix, two new friends of Elle.
Thibault de Montalembert also joins the cast as Stephane, Nick’s father. The three actors will join previously announced newcomers Leila Khan as Higgs student Sahar Zahid, Jack Barton as Nick’s older brother David Nelson, Nima Taleghani as Truham teacher Mr. Farouk and Bradley Riches as Truham student James McEwan.
