Netflix is developing 80 games, planning to add a new title every week

Netflix has made clear how it plans to approach gaming, and it is making a significant move.

The streaming platform has revealed that it now has more than 80 games under development and plans to release at least one new game into the Netflix Stories app each month during its most recent earnings announcement.

Greg Peters, co-CEO and president of Netflix, said that the company's primary motivation for getting into gaming is financial gain.

He claimed that the $150 billion (£116 billion) yearly revenue generated by the global gaming sector, excluding China and Russia, also does not include advertising money. The absence of micro-transactions (a business model where users can purchase in-game virtual goods with micropayments) and advertisements is a significant feature that sets Netflix's video game releases apart.

Nevertheless, Mr Peters hinted at the potential for ad-supported games in the future, stating that the "current" Netflix business model does not include ad-supported game revenue. He made no future plans or exclusions.

"Interactive narrative games" which are beneficial for business because they are "easier to build" are something that Netflix consumers are particularly appreciating, he continued. The games based on the television shows Virgin River and Perfect Match have been among the most popular releases.

Mr Peters added: "Starting this month in July, we're going to launch about one new title per month into Netflix Stories, and this is amazing IP like Emily in Paris and Selling Sunset. And we have lots more, including very different types of games yet to come in the quarters and years ahead.”

These games are available through the Netflix Stores link.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy-The Definitive Edition was one of the most well-known titles that Netflix Games has released to date; it was added to the library at the end of 2023.

What are some of the games that are being introduced?

A multiplayer Squid Game game is among Netflix's upcoming big releases; it will launch this year along with Season 2 of the series.

In addition, Joseph Staten, the former director of Halo and Destiny, is collaborating with Netflix on a AAA cross-platform game.

How do Netflix games work?

Android smartphones and tablets, as well as iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, can download and play Netflix games. You can access games by using your Netflix login and account.

There are over 100 games available including Sonic Mania Plus, Skies of Chaos, Stranger Things 3 and Tomb Raider.
