Netflix heist show Lupin suffers £250k on-set robbery as actor Omar Sy filmed scene

Hit Netflix heist series Lupin reportedly suffered an on-set robbery of equipment worth £250,000 last month while filming.

This comes after thieves stole £150,000 worth of gems and antiques from the set of fellow Netflix show The Crown while the series films it's fifth series.

The theft on the set of the French mystery thriller is believed to have occurred just days after the gems and silverware were pinched from The Crown.

Netflix confirmed there was an “incident” on the Parisian set on February 25 while filming the upcoming season following the adventures of gentleman thief Arsène Lupin.

A spokesperson for the streaming platform told Entertainment Weekly: “Our cast and crew are safe and there were no injuries. We have now resumed filming.”

Around 20 people reportedly broke onto the set and nabbed €300,000 - equivalent to £250,000 - worth of equipment after throwing mortar fireworks.

The thieves burst onto the set as French actor Omar Sy, who plays the protagonist, was performing in a scene, according to Agence France-Presse.

The robbery took place in a neighbourhood in Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris, and filming resumed on Monday after a brief hiatus.

The heist thriller started filming in November, but a release date for the third part of the Netflix series has not yet been announced.

In the case of the theft from The Crown set, three vehicles were broken into in south Yorkshire during the final week of production, but Netflix said the robbery did not affect the production and a police investigation is underway.

A pricey replica of a Russian Faberge Egg bought by the Queen’s grandfather was amongst the 200 props stolen.

Along with the copy of the egg acquired in 1933 by King George V, there were candelabras, jewellery, a grandfather clock, and a domed birdcage nicked.

A spokesperson for Netflix said in the wake of the incident: “We can confirm the antiques have been stolen and we hope that they are found and returned safely. Replacements will be sourced; there is no expectation that filming will be held up.”

The Crown is scheduled to return to Netflix for its fifth season in November, boasting an all-new cast as it follows the royal family’s journey into the late ’90s.

Imelda Staunton will play the next Queen Elizabeth, Jonathon Pryce will step into the shoes of the Duke of Edinburgh and Elizabeth Debicki is set to play a glamorous Princess Diana.
