Netflix fans convinced Black Mirror is returning after four years

Fans are convinced that a huge Netflix show could be making a comeback after nearly four years after a cryptic social media post sent them into a frenzy. Black Mirror dropped its last episode in June 2019, but a post on Twitter has got fans' hopes up that news regarding the show’s future may be imminent.

Created by writer and satirist Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series presents stand-alone dystopian stories that explore themes of contemporary techno-paranoia. Often likened to a modern take on The Twilight Zone, it proved a huge success when it launched on Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix.

In July 2022, it was announced that production had begun on the show’s upcoming sixth season, but since then everything has been quiet, and no potential release date has been confirmed. Now the show’s official Twitter account has posted a cryptic message, breaking nearly four years of silence.

The account posted its last tweet on July 14, 2019, but on Tuesday (April 25) it posted a cryptic four-word tweet.

“What have we missed?” it read.

Adding further speculation, Brooker himself replied to the tweet with a quizzical face emoji.

Fans and official Netflix accounts from around the world also responded to the tweet, highlighting the fact that since Black Mirror last aired the world has faced a pandemic, welcomed innovative artificial intelligence, and seen a businessman-turned-TV presenter become president and subsequently be indicted. The official Netflix account replied: “Scientists are still creating robots that slowly harness more and more advanced AI like they haven't watched a single episode of your show.”

Netflix Latin America simply said: “ChatGPT.”

Black Mirror’s tweet has tantalised fans and sent them into a frenzy, with many calling for confirmation of a new series. @JayGreinsky said: “Please...PLEASE......just release the season. We are seething with anticipation!”

@awittywizard added: “Need some news on a new season sooooon.”

@Bedollz added: “Where the hell have you been?! New season please!”

Last May, Variety reported that the show would be making a comeback and its new series would consist of more episodes than in previous years. Casting rumours have suggested some huge names are set to appear, including Salma Hayek Pinault, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Atlanta star Zazie Beetz, and Josh Hartnett.
