Netflix fans ask 'what's the point' as popular show cancelled after just one season

Netflix fans have asked 'what's the point' after the streaming service cancelled a popular show after just one season.

There will be no follow-up to mystery drama 1899, which chronicled a group of immigrants travelling from London to New York on a steamship after getting caught up in a supernatural riddle in the middle of the sea. The show, which had eight episodes, was created by Dark showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.

It starred Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann and Gabby Wong and racked up 79.27 million hours viewed in its first three days alone. Baran said 'millions of fans' would be disappointed as he shared the news on Monday (January 2).

Posting a statement to Instagram, he said: "With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.

He added: "That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget."

Fans took to social media to share their disappointment at the cancellation, with many questioning Netflix for its decision. @SchonterAllison tweeted: "This is such disappointing news. Honestly, what is even the point of investing time into Netflix originals when they never make it past the first or second season? #1899Netflix" and @GroundhogJay_ echoed: "What’s the point in watching anything new on Netflix now? Might as well just wait until the very rare kind of show they renew has had its entire run before starting. #1899Netflix".

@ohholymountain_ said: "Netflix will have 300 shows about people cooking and f**k boys on desert islands, but you cancel literally every original or good show? What is even the point #1899Netflix" while @followthereader added: "I honestly feel like Netflix just need to stop greenlighting complex multi-season stories when they're so jittery about renewals. If you don't want to commit, stick to movies or miniseries and let the other platforms pick up longform storytelling. #1899Netflix."
