How do you like your Godzilla? Do you like him teaming with King Kong as he does in Hollywood's latest iteration of the monster in movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire? Or do you prefer him as a solo act saving Japan from various monsters? Or do you want the OG Godzilla, the one that was terrorizing the citizens of Japan and was in black and white? If it's the latter then you're in luck, as Netflix is adding the perfect option for you in August.
Godzilla Minus One Minus Color is now streaming on Netflix. While the title is a bit of a mouthful, all you need to know is that it is a black-and-white version of the 2023 movie Godzilla Minus One that became a hit worldwide. While Godzilla Minus One already was pretty much a reimagining of the 1954 original movie from Toho Studios, the black-and-white version is just another tip of the cap to Godzilla's initial run.
And don't worry if you’re not a fan of black-and-white, the original colorized version of Godzilla Minus One is still available to stream on Netflix.
Godzilla Minus One released in movie theaters in 2023 and immediately became a hit. It has a "Certified Fresh" score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, made $56.4 million in the US and $115.8 million worldwide and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki, the movie was praised for not only its incredible action set pieces, but the human story at its center, described by Netflix as a "gripping tale of veterans fighting to protect a war-torn Japan from a nuclear-supercharged Godzilla."
Netflix debuted Godzilla Minus One on its platform back in June, where it quickly made its way into the Top 10 most watched movies for the US (where it would spend two weeks and rise as high as the third most-watched movie) and the UK (one week in top 10, reaching the fifth most-watched movie). Will Netflix subscribers be intrigued by watching (or rewatching) the monster movie in black and white? Time will tell, but the movie looks absolutely gorgeous in black and white. To watch either version of Godzilla Minus One on Netflix you must be a subscriber to the streaming platform. The movie is also available to rent via digital on-demand platforms if you don't subscribe to Netflix.
