Israel’s Prime Minister emphasized the importance of Israel maintaining control over the Philadelphi corridor, a strategic link between Gaza and Egypt. In a press conference, the Prime Minister stated that control of the corridor is essential for the safe return of hostages and to counter the threat posed by Hamas.
He stressed that the Philadelphi corridor is a critical asset that must remain under Israeli control, referring to it as a key element in combating what he described as the 'axis of evil.'
While calling for unity, the Prime Minister acknowledged divisions within his cabinet regarding the corridor. Some ministers have expressed the view that Israeli forces should withdraw from the area, leading to a formal discussion within the cabinet to clarify the government's stance.
Netanyahu expressed surprise at the dissenting opinions within his government, particularly after a decision had been made to maintain control over the corridor. He raised concerns about the potential message this conflicting stance could send to Hamas, the militant group in control of Gaza.
The Philadelphi corridor is a 14-kilometer strip of land along Gaza’s border with Egypt that is currently under Israeli military control. The presence of Israeli troops in this area has been a major point of contention in negotiations with Hamas, particularly concerning ceasefires and the release of hostages.
Israel has insisted on retaining control of the border zone as a crucial first step in any potential agreement, while Hamas has demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area as a precondition for any deal.
