Neilston boss says Drumchapel are a cut above as former Rangers and Hearts star inspires win

Neilston co-boss Chris Cameron admits he’s glad his side don’t have to face league leaders Drumchapel every week.

That’s because he feels the in-form Glasgow club, who boast former Rangers and Hearts winger David Templeton in their ranks, are a cut above the rest of the teams they’ve faced in the First Division this season.

The Farmer’s Boys held their own in the first half at the Donald Dewar Centre before a controversial penalty decision handed them an opener just before the break.

While Cameron was disappointed with the manner of Drumchapel’s first goal, he was hugely impressed by the hosts throughout.

Particularly Templeton, who showed he’s still got silky skill in his boots having previously retired as a professional at Hamilton Accies last season.

Cameron said: “We’ve been on a bad run, but that’s probably the best we’ve playing in three or four weeks. The performance level was much better.

“We probably shaded the first 40 minutes and then we’re sitting 2-0 down at half-time wondering how that’s happened.

“It’s a terrible decision for the penalty. Our defender gets in the right position in front of their man but somehow the decision goes against us.

“They scored again a few minutes after and that just took the wind out of our sails.

“We asked our boys to try and go and get the next goal but they are a very good team. They are definitely the best team we’ve played in this division and sometimes that can happen where a team is just a level above.

“They’ve got an ex-Rangers and Hearts player in Templeton that was a real threat throughout.

“He retired last year but is friends with their manager, who convinced him to try and keep playing.

“Watching him on Saturday, you could see he was still a class act and a proper game changer. They’re solid all over the park though, it’s not just him. I expect them to go and challenge for the title, no doubt about it.”

After a disappointing run in the league, Cameron is hoping their upcoming cup clash against Fourth Division side Harmony Row can provide some welcome respite.

Cameron added: “Sometimes cup competitions can be a welcome distraction from the league. Given our current run that’s hopefully the case this time around.

“This is a real opportunity to get into the next round and we’ll be putting out a strong team and hopefully getting a good few goals to build the confidence back up.”
