Neil Warnock has led the tributes to former Notts County player and assistant manager Mick Jones after his death was reported on by the club.
Jones was assistant manager to Warnock during the club’s rise to the first division back in the 1990s. He also played for the club as they won promotion from division four in 1970/71 as well as the promotion campaign of 1972/73. In total he had three separate spells at Notts.
In a statement on their official website, Notts confirmed the news. “We are deeply saddened to report the passing of our former player and assistant manager, Mick Jones,” it read.

“Mick enjoyed a variety of successes at Meadow Lane, perhaps most notably as assistant to Neil Warnock during our incredible rise to the First Division in the early 90s.”
Jones returned to Notts as assistant to Chris Kiwomya in 2013, where he played a big part in the signing of Manchester City superstar Jack Grealish on loan. The former Aston Villa man spent the 2013/14 season at Meadow Lane before returning to Villa Park.
Warnock will be at Meadow Lane as a guest for Notts’ home clash against Chesterfield on Saturday, August 20. There will also be a minute's applause held before kick off in tribute to Jones.
Taking to social media after the news was confirmed, Warnock paid tribute to his former assistant. “Sad to report my old assistant manager Mick Jones passed away this morning,” he wrote on Twitter.
“We had some unbelievable times. Mick was the sensible one. I’ll miss him loads. Boy did we have some laughs. RIP.”
