Neil Warnock is expecting 'big things' from Nick Pope at Newcastle United. Pope signed for the Magpies this summer, joining from Burnley for a fee in the region of £10 million.
Pope got his Newcastle career off to the perfect start, keeping a clean sheet in the Magpies' 2-0 opening day win over Nottingham Forest. The goalkeeper had very little to do at St James' Park on his debut, on an afternoon where the visitors failed to register a shot on target.
Pope is battling for the number one shirt with Martin Dubravka, with both goalkeepers impressing during pre-season, but it seems as though Pope has been given the nod between the sticks by Eddie Howe.
Former Premier League manager Warnock has high hopes for Pope at Newcastle. The 73-year-old says he would include the goalkeeper in England's squad for the World Cup in Qatar later this year, although he would select Jordan Pickford as the number one. However, he does believe that Pope could be 'one of the best goalkeepers in the country' over the course of the season.
“I’m expecting big things from him at Newcastle,” Warnock said in an interview with Sport Bible.
“I think he could easily be one of the best goalkeepers in the country in the next 12 months.”
