Neil McCann conceded Rangers ’ penalty awarded by referee Steven McLean against Dundee "is of the soft variety".
Gio van Bronckhorst’s side cruised into the semi-final stage of the Scottish Cup thanks to goals from Connor Goldson and Fashion Sakala, alongside a James Tavernier spot kick.
Ahead of Tavernier's penalty, Ryan Sweeney looked to have body-checked the Ibrox skipper with whistler McLean awarding the foul.
However, former Dundee manager and Rangers star McCann reckons it was a fortunate call for the visitors.
McCann told Premier Sports: “At first when I watched it, I thought it was soft, because I don’t think Sweeney can go anywhere.
“But on reflection he does put a step towards him. As James Tavernier goes in he works on the outside, and Sweeney steps across him. He catches him full chest.
“It is of the soft variety, I can see why Steven McLean have given it so I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
“He (Sweeney) just comes across but he should just match the run.”
Despite the views of his fellow pundit, Kevin Thomson gave any discussion short shrift.
He added : “He has just got caught square (Sweeney) to be honest.
“He had been defending quite well, to be honest. He had been hitting (away) the long diagonal.”
