Neil McCann in Alfredo Morelos Rangers on air blast as BBC pundit hits out at Tynecastle celebration

Neil McCann launched an on air attack on Alfredo Morelos as he questioned 'what's going through the boy's head' after his celebration in front of the Hearts support.

The Rangers striker netted twice as Michael Beale and his troops ran out comfortable winners in the capital. Malik Tillman netted the Light Blues' other goal as they ran out 3-0 winners at Tynecastle to remain nine points behind Celtic at the top of the Premiership table and extend their unbeaten start to life under the new management regime.

That's now 11 games unbeaten for Beale and 13 for the Ibrox side, but it was a moment on the park that had McCann brand Morelos the 'pantomime villain' as he called on the Colombian to 'show a bit of class and humility' after his celebrations. He told BBC Sportsound: “I don’t know why he does it. He’s the pantomime villain. He reacted after he scored his first one – a really good header – by going to that little corner, and I’ve said how tight this ground is, and he just antagonises the Hearts fans by doing on his knees and doing the usual.

“I said at the time I didn’t like it. But the second one, because we are waiting so long (for VAR decision, he’s got no reason to antagonise the Hearts fans again. He runs away from his own fans to do it.

“I don’t know what’s going through the boy’s head. I don’t like it. I was maybe strong with my comments. Maybe I shouldn’t have said it.” [Called him an idiot]

Then Willie Miller, who was working at Aberdeen vs St Mirren for BBC, jumped in and referred to the recent Aberdeen-Rangers game when he said: “You should have Neil. He did it at Pittodrie. After Arfield scored, it’s Morelos that grabs the ball and winds up the Aberdeen fans in the Richard Donald Stand.”

McCann reckons Morelos could have provoked a supporter to come onto the pitch with his celebration. He added: “All it takes is a headcase to say I’ve had enough of this. If you remember Celtic here and the fan who jumped the dugout and attacked Neil Lennon, all it takes is one fan to think ‘I’ve had enough’ and is on the pitch and we have a horror story.

“I’d encourage him that you can have a bit of banter but don’t run past your own fans to celebrate to the other fans. It’s inflammatory, it’s uncalled for and John Beaton should have cautioned him because that puts a lid on it.

“And then Barisic kicks the ball into the fans. I don’t know what was going on tonight, there was a little bit of an atmosphere between the fans and the Rangers players and they didn’t need to do that because they were streets ahead of the team on the pitch and that was salt in the wounds enough.

“The performance showed how far ahead they were and it didn’t require that type of behaviour. Show a bit of class, show a bit of humility and that separates you from the rest.”
