Neil Lennon questions current Callum McGregor Celtic role

Celtic hero Neil Lennon has questioned Callum McGregor's current role at the club.

The Hoops captain has mostly played in a more defensive role since 2021, after the arrival of former boss Ange Postecoglou.

But Lennon feels the Scotland international would be better higher up the park.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, he said: "Let McGregor play further forward. The game on Wednesday, when Iwata started and Callum was playing the number eight role.

"They started off the game really well. They gave Callum that licence to dictate the game further up the pitch.

“Then Iwata had to come off and Callum had to drop into the number six position, just the momentum stopped.

"Feyenoord started creating chances. I don’t think he is a great number six. He is far better playing that 6/8 role. Going in and scoring goals.

"For me, a physical presence in midfield is a must.”

Meanwhile, Celtic loanee Nat Phillips is set to return to Liverpool in January.

This is according to the Athletic who claim that the defender's spell in Glasgow is not expected to be extended beyond next month and he will likely seek other opportunities.

Phillips joined the Hoops in August as Brendan Rodgers' side were experiencing an injury crisis at centre-back with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh all being injured at the time.

However, as those players have returned to fitness the 26-year-old's chances have become limited.

He has featured eight times for the Scottish champions in total, starting on four occasions.
