Neighbours wake up to find burned out car on quiet street

A burned out car was found on a quiet street.

Neighbours on Weedon Avenue, Newton-le-Willows woke up on Thursday September 22 to find a car that had been set alight and destroyed overnight. There has been a spate of vandalism involving cars in the area in recent weeks, as the ECHO reported last week.

Speaking on the burned out car on Weedon Avenue, Councillor Terry Maguire said: "We are aware of the car that was burned out in Weedon Ave last Wednesday night. We had meetings with residents on Thursday/ Friday morning and reported this to relevant council departments to remove as it is a danger to children and residents alike.

"The council sent a team to clean around the vehicle but the vehicle has not yet been removed. We are told that this is to do with insurances. We think that safety should come first and hope the vehicle is removed soon."

This is not the first time cars have been targeted in the area in recent weeks, as nine vehicles were reported damaged on Monday September 19. Photos seen by the ECHO show several cars with smashed windscreens close to Newton train station.

One concerned resident last week told the ECHO they are "living in fear of whoever did this coming back." The car owner, who asked not to be named, said: "Us residents are on edge and concerned about our safety. It’s very frustrating, I've just finally had mine fixed yesterday and I’m on pins he will return this eve."

People in the area have said they have reported the incidents to police. Some of the streets hit by the vandals include: Park Road North, Park Road South, Mill Lane, Mercer Street, and High Street.
