Neighbours is known for its dramatic - and occasionally downright bizarre - storylines. From characters returning back from the dead to fatal plane crashes and even a dog’s dream sequence, here are ten of the soap’s best moments.
Scott and Charlene's wedding
A whopping 20 million Brits tuned in to watch Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell (played by Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue) tie the knot on 8 November 1988. The pair later had a number one single with Especially For You.
Bouncer's dream
In 1990 Neighbours featured a barking mad dream sequence in which Bouncer, the Mangel family’s labrador, fantasised that he was marrying Rosie, the Border Collie who lived next door.
Harold's return
In September 1991, Harold Bishop was blown out to sea while on a coastal holiday with wife Madge. He came back from the dead five years later when he re-emerged as a man with amnesia named Ted, and slowly regained his memory thanks to his wife.
Todd's ghost
Todd Landers also returned from the grave in 1992 - but this time as a ghost in the mirror to his bereaved girlfriend Phoebe Bright after he was fatally hit by a van on the way to the clinic where she was aborting their baby.
Marlene's cruise
5. Elvis-obsessed character Marlene Kratz left Ramsay Street for a three-month cruise in 1997 - but never returned and was never mentioned again. Fans spent years wondering what happened, and finally in 2005 it was revealed that she had enjoyed it so much she had decided to remain at sea.
Susan's amnesia
In 2002, long-standing character Susan Kennedy slipped on an upturned bowl of cereal sustaining a head injury, which caused her to lose 30 years of memories including her life with on/off husband Karl. She also believed she was 16 again - something that got more confusing when she wandered into a 1970s-themed party.
Toadfish's wedding
It was a wedding day to remember for all the wrong reasons for hapless Toadfish Rebecchi in 2003 when he accidentally drove his car over a cliff while mid-kiss with new wife Dee. Although she appeared to have died, in typical Neighbours fashion she reappeared 14 years on.
Dee's doppleganger
Dee’s return also led to a bizarre doppleganger storyline, which saw a woman named Andrea Somers, who was also played by Dee actress Madeleine West, impersonated Dee to try and defraud Toadie. In 2019, both Dee and Andrea had a dramatic showdown, where once again Dee ended up over a cliff.
Paul's bombshell
To ‘celebrate’ the show’s 20th anniversary in 2005, in an episode watched by 6.75 million Brits, several characters including members of Harold’s family were killed when a bomb was detonated on a plane chartered by Paul Robinson. Normally mild-mannered Harold went on to strangle Paul Robinson - it was Paul’s son who’d planted the device to target his father.
The tornado
A tornado hit Erinsborough in 2014, leaving Lou Carpenter’s life in danger after the roof of the area’s coffee shop collapsed on him. Susan Kennedy saved the day, performing an emergency tracheotomy with the aid of husband Dr Karl - who was on the phone talking her through it.
