Neighbours speak of shock after man dies in Leeds house fire

Neighbours have been left shocked by the tragic death of a man in a Leeds house fire at the weekend.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed a man had died after emergency services rushed to a home fire on Green Lane in Whitkirk on Sunday morning (June 4) with reports a man was trapped inside. He was pulled from the house, but died at the scene.

One resident who lives around the corner told LeedsLive: "We heard loads of fire engines and ambulances about 9.30am. There were police cars too.

"Hearing them made me worry about what had happened - it's a bit scary, though I didn't see any smoke at the time. The old man who lived there was always out in his garden."

Pictures from the scene on Sunday showed multiple West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service fire engines outside the home as well as ambulances and police cars blocking the road. An investigation remains ongoing, though police said the incident isn't thought to be suspicious.

The door to the home remains boarded up at the moment.

A couple living nearby to the affected house said it was "shocking" when they heard a man had died, saying "it's no way to go". They weren't in at the time but had rushed home to check the fire hadn't spread to their home.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said earlier today: "At 9.24am on Sunday (June 4), police were contacted by the fire service who were attending a report of a house fire with persons trapped at an address in Green Lane, Whitkirk.

"Officers attended and initially assisted with a request for a road closure. A male was removed from the address and received medical attention at the scene. He was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

"Investigations are continuing with the fire service, but the incident is not thought to be suspicious."
