Residents have spoken about their "shock" after a man was stabbed in their town. Shortly before 12noon on Monday, February 27, officers received reports that a man had been injured close to the cinema on Pimlico, Ilkeston.
The man was found with two stab wounds and taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been released, but no arrests have yet been made, Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed.
Members of the community have shared their horror of the event, saying that it's not the sort of town where things like that happen. Retired Steven Smith, 75, said: "It was quite a shock for Ilkeston.
"We have lived here since 2006 and it's not an area where there's a lot of violent behaviour. It's a smallish place and there's quite a sense of community in Ilkeston so it is really a shock, but with knife crime you don't know the circumstances."
He continued: "It's an absolutely shocking thing to happen, especially on your doorstep. A stabbing is horrific, but it seems so out of character for Ilkeston.
"On Friday and Saturday night things can get quite lively, but not to the extent that I would feel unsafe. It's a nice little town, it's so sad to see so many things closing."
Steven added that despite what happened he still feels safe in the town. When asked about the incident, carer, Jenny Holmes, 39, said: "I didn't hear anything about it."
When asked if there was a lot of criminal and anti-social behaviour in the area, she replied: "I only know what I've seen on Facebook, like people throwing stuff at the buses. I don't really get out a lot at the moment as I can't afford it, but I think it's alright in town.
"My daughter was out a few months ago and she was ok and enjoyed herself." When asked if he had any safety concerns, retired, Desmond Wall, 78, said: "I don't have any concerns, at my age I wouldn't get into any fights now."
Speaking of the incident, Desmond said: "I've heard about it since it happened. It is surprising, it's just a one off I think." A 55 year old who did not wish to be named added: "Normally the town feels safe, and on a night there's a lot of security in the pubs."
She added that she has been in the area for years and has "never" heard of something like this happening.
