Neighbours relieved 'dramatic' Wollaton bungalow fire was not more dangerous

Neighbours have spoken of their relief that a 'dramatic' bungalow fire was not more dangerous. Fire crews were called to Middleton Boulevard, Wollaton at 10.47am on Tuesday, January 24, where a blaze had taken hold in a garage and spread to a bungalow.

Three fire engines were called to the scene, with firefighters using two hose reel jets and breathing apparatus. The fire was out one hour later and the property was handed back to its owner by early afternoon, with no injuries reported by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Local residents said they were thankful no-one had been hurt in the fire, which one neighbour described as a "dramatic scene". Rizuan Basir, 35, an accountant who lives on Middleton Boulevard said: "I was at work at the time, but when I came back the street was full with police and fire engines.

"It looked very serious from what I saw, it was a very dramatic scene. It was quite shocking and the road was closed for a while - I'm relieved it didn't get worse and was put out quickly."

Another neighbour, Joe Whitman, a 21-year-old University of Nottingham student, had not noticed the fire but had heard the sirens filling the street. "That's quite a shock because I didn't know there had been a fire so close, it is surprising I didn't see it. I'm glad no-one seems seriously hurt though.

"I didn't see anything at all, but in the morning I did hear the sirens coming onto the street. There's never anything like that going on down here, we have a few crashes sometimes, but a fire is very different."

A Wollaton resident, who did want to be named, added: "It looks like it was quite bad and I heard the sirens the other day. I hope whoever lives there is getting any support they need - it must be awful to have that happen to your home."

Nottinghamshire Live attempted to contact the occupants of the home, but received no reply. Two lanes were shut on Middleton Boulevard A6514 southbound close to Crown Island at around 11.20am on Tuesday, January 24, as the incident was tackled by emergency services.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "At 10.47am today we responded to a fire in Middleton Boulevard in Wollaton. A fire in a garage had spread to a bungalow.

"We used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and firefighters used breathing apparatus. The fire was out one hour later and handed back over to the owner early this afternoon.

"Three fire engines attended – the crews were from Stockhill, London Road and Highfields."
