Neighbours in Notts town confused over loud bangs in the middle of the night

Residents in Retford remain confused and frustrated as bangs "louder than anything you can imagine" are continued to be heard in the middle of the night. People living in the market town said they have been regularly woken up by deafening bangs as early as around 3am - but nobody seems to know why.

It was previously reported that the bangs were first heard in the early hours of the morning on Thursday, March 10. Several theories were put forward, from teenagers messing around with fireworks to railway engineers sounding emergency detonators, reports Lincolnshire Live.

Donna Pashley, who lives by the railway line, said she was awake at the time reading about the war in Ukraine. At 3.23am, she heard a bang "louder than anything you can imagine" and then another one minute later.

She told Lincolnshire Live: "It was quite disturbing. It was a really loud bang. At first I wondered if someone had let something off in the subway, but it sounded like metal hitting metal. I'd read about it happening but I hadn't heard it happen yet." Mrs Pashley said she had read several possible explanations, but remained sceptical.

"Somebody said it was an aeroplane breaking the sound barrier, but it wasn't one of them," she said. "And some people have said it was a firework being let off, but they can't be that loud.

"People have said they heard the bangs all across Retford, from where I am up towards Hallcroft." She added: "It's really unusual - I would like to see people get to the bottom of it. It could be bird scarers not set on the right timings, but no matter what it is, it's got to be stopped. It's waking everybody up."

Another resident, who lived further into town but did not wish to be named, said she suspected it could be part of an urban myth involving late-night fireworks. She said: "I thought it could be people lighting a firework to alert others to the fact there had been a drug drop.

"I looked it up and it did say that is something they do. Because I'd read about it before I looked out the window to see if I could see any in the sky, but I couldn't."

Like Mrs Pashley, she said she wanted to see the bangs stop, after hearing them happen four nights in a row the previous week. She said she had heard fireworks go off at around 3am every morning from Thursday, March 17 until Sunday, March 20.

"It's a real pain because our dog reacts really badly to fireworks," she said. "We can cover it over Bonfire Night, but not every night. It's becoming a disturbance. I wouldn't normally comment about it but I'm just fed up of it happening."

Residents from all over Retford, especially those living on Albert Roadd, took to Facebook to try to work out an explanation. Several theories floated around, ranging from the bangs having potential links to a drug deal to the more innocuous suggestion that the bangs were related to work being carried out by railway engineers.

Many residents said they were sick of the bangs happening, but nobody seemed to be able to agree on an explanation.
