People have shared their hopes for housing developments to clear up a former school site they say is a 'mess'. If approved by Broxtowe Borough Council's planning committee on Tuesday, June 28, 60 assisted living apartments would be built on the former site of Lynncroft Primary School in Walker Street, Eastwood.
The application is recommended to be granted planning permission, subject to conditions. There are plans for 110 houses on the rest of the old school site which have already been approved.
Locals were enthusiastic about the works, which they said would make use of the vacant land. Judith Naylor, 71, who has lived in Eastwood for most her life, said: “I think it would be good for the area, with more people around. The field isn't actually doing anything at the moment.
"It would be nice to have, they are needed because nursing homes can’t take them in and they may need someone to be of assistance. If it ever gets there, it would be nice. It is a nice area.”
Chrissie Draper, 46, a teacher from Eastwood, said: “I walk around here all the time, I wouldn’t mind it if it was just on the primary school but not on the field where people walk their dogs. But at the same time you need houses and people need somewhere to live.
"My two kids went to that school and to see it overgrown and nothing happen to it is sad. It looks a mess and people are wanting to know who is going to move in - if it’s social housing or private."
A resident nearby, who wished not to be named, added: “It’s nice for people that have needs to have somewhere to live. It’s nice for them to have homes.
"I know people would prefer not to have it and have concerns over traffic and infrastructure but homes need to be built. People need homes and I understand that, the land has been like that for a while now.”
In a planning document, Aspbury Planning, on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "The Application Proposals comprise a residential development consisting of a total of 170dwellings. The site is to be separated into two development schemes, herein referred to as ‘North’ and ‘South’.
"Splitting the proposals in this manner not only addresses the technical difficulties resulting from the dramatic change in levels across the site, but also allows disposal of the market housing (C3) scheme to a private developer with the assisted living(C2) accommodation being retained by the Applicant.6.2 Two junctions, one from Lynncroft and one from Walker Street, have the benefit of planning permission granted under Nottinghamshire County Council planning referenceFR3/4116 and 4117."
