A Neighbours producer has confirmed Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will return to Ramsay Street for an emotional farewell to the soap.
The pair are set to resume their roles of Scott and Charlene which helped launch their pop careers in the 80s with the romantic hit Especially For You.
Bosses had been teasing a comeback to the show's biggest names for the final episodes as the legendary characters return for the finale
Executive producer Jason Herbison posted to the soap's official Instagram account: "Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them.
"We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale. It has been an emotional experience for them, for us and I'm sure it will be for our viewers."
Accompanying the post were two up-close pictures of a script with Scott and Charlene's names on it.
Since exiting the show Scott and Charlene have been named one of TV's best couples with the Telegraph branded them "a supercouple and a bit of a Romeo and Juliet as their two families had an ongoing feud."
Heart Radio placed them at number one on their list of Iconic TV Soap Couples, saying "Everyone's favourite teenage sweethearts had us rooting for them throughout their time together in the Australian soap."
Accompanying the post were two up-close pictures of a script with Scott and Charlene's names on it.
Their wedding was watched by more than two million Australian viewers when it first aired, and later pulled in an audience of almost 20 million when it was shown in the UK in 1988.
Kylie and Jason both shared one picture each to their respective profiles of the halves of the script, although they have remained tight lipped on their return.
One fan posted: "Amazing way to finish the show off, hats off to Kylie & Jason for been part of #CelebratingNeighbours "
"This makes me happy to see him and @kylieminogue back on the show. Tissues will be at the ready. This is where I first became a huge fan of Jason seeing him on Neighbours on his first episode."
Another posted: "ooooo exciting. But I'd rather the show just continues."
The return of arguably the long running soaps biggest names comes after Channel 5 pulled the plug on funding for the show and no other broadcaster stepped up to foot the bill for British viewers who are the main audience.
A fan petition to save Neighbours attracted over 66,000 signatures, yet the end remains on the horizon.
The air date for the final ever episode has already been confirmed, with a Network 10 spokesperson confirming Monday August 1st.
It is understood that Channel 5 will air the finale on the same date.
Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5.
