Neighbours capture moment derelict building collapses to rubble

The shocking moment an old church hall collapsed into rubble was caught on camera.

The back end of St Oswalds Parish Club on St Oswalds Street, Old Swan, crumbled at 6.11pm today, March 28, causing emergency services to race to the scene.

Mill Lane was cordoned off as police, North West Ambulance Services and Merseyside Fire and Rescue attended the "partial collapse" of the building, which is currently under construction, with scaffolding on the front.

One neighbour said: "There was a major incident, and we thought 'there's kids who go in there, climb in there'. They sent the sniffer dogs in. Half an hour earlier, there were probably builders in there cleaning up."

He said he counted "ten or fifteen" police vehicles and ambulances in the road.

Emergency services remained at the scene for nearly two hours as search and rescue dogs scoured the area. However, no casualties were found.

A fire service spokesman said: "We can confirm that crews from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were called to an incident on St Oswalds Street on Tuesday, March 28. We were alerted at 18.17pm and two fire engines and a search and rescue team arrived at the scene at 18.21pm.

"Crews were met with a two-storey building with a partially collapsed gable end. A cordon was set up and search and rescue dogs were deployed to confirm there were no casualties. This was confirmed shortly after. A structural engineer has been requested and crews left the scene at 19.55pm following handover to Merseyside Police."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the emergency services were called to Old Swan this afternoon following a report of a building collapse. Merseyside Fire and Rescue, Merseyside Police and the North West Ambulance Service were called at 6.12pm to the old St Oswald’s Church Building, which is currently under renovation.

"There had been a partial collapse of part of the building. "There are no reports of any injuries.

"Mill Lane was closed at the junction of Edge Lane and one lane of St Oswald Street was also closed, and following a safety assessment by a structural engineer the roads have now been reopened.

"The roads have now been reopened and we would like to the thank members of the public for their patience whilst incident was ongoing."
