On a quiet Saturday afternoon in Derby, 82-year-old Gerard Ring was doing something he loved. The retired builder, who was originally from Dublin, Ireland, was a father, grandfather and great-grandfather who had spent nearly a decade living with incurable blood cancer.
Despite his illness, Ring remained independent. He got around his neighborhood on a mobility scooter and often spent his afternoons sitting in the front garden of his home at Whitecross Gardens, watching the local wildlife and sometimes falling asleep in his chair.
