An adult in their 60s has died of West Nile virus in Lancaster County, the first death from the virus in Nebraska this season and the first in the county since 2023. The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department announced the death on September 1, in the stretch of late summer when West Nile transmission historically peaks in the Great Plains.
Lancaster County, which contains Lincoln and about 334,000 residents by the Census Bureau's most recent estimate, has recorded seven human West Nile cases this summer. Four of those people required hospitalization. That hospitalization ratio is the number worth pausing on, because it says something the raw case count does not: the infections being detected locally are skewing toward the severe end.
