Maine has spent nearly a decade trying to persuade homeowners to test their well water for arsenic, and the share who have done so has barely moved. State figures show 53% of Mainers on private well water had tested for arsenic as of 2023, the most recent data available, compared with roughly 48% in 2014.
The state's benchmark was 65% by 2020. It has not been met, and the program built to help lower-income households treat contaminated wells has reached far fewer homes than officials projected, according to reporting by The Maine Monitor.
