Nearly half of dog owners are unaware that their pooch should be wearing sunscreen

The hot British weather is being felt not just by people, but pets too – with nearly half of dog owners unaware that their pooch should be wearing sunscreen during the heatwave. Over half of dog owners (51 per cent) will be taking their four-legged friend away on a summer staycation this year, according to a poll of 2,000 Brits.

And for nearly nine in ten (88 per cent) of those who purchased a pup during the pandemic, it will be their dog's first holiday. But 46 per cent don't realise that it's not just their own skin that needs protecting with suncream, but their pet's, too.

Over half (55 per cent) weren't aware of any potential side effects of their dog being sunburned – and 70 per cent have no idea how much sunscreen to apply on their dogs. Worryingly, 57 per cent never apply sunscreen when they take their dogs outdoors, while 40 per cent think it’s fine to use human sunscreen on dogs – despite these often containing chemicals that may be toxic to them.
