Nearly 100 minors detained after breaking into Bay Area theater for booze-fueled party, police say

Nearly 100 minors were detained after breaking into an abandoned Bay Area theater and throwing a booze-fueled party.

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Burbank Theater, a shuttered theater in San Jose, around 9:30 p.m. Friday to investigate reports of trespassing, NBC Bay Area reported.

Concerned callers told authorities they heard loud vehicles in the area — and also saw multiple people enter the abandoned theater carrying alcohol, the sheriff’s office said.

“After deputies made announcements, individuals inside attempted to flee by forcing open alternative exit doors, and several people were seen on the roof,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz told SFGate.

Deputies forced the nearly 100 minors out of the building before they were detained.

Authorities then set up a command post before contacting the minors’ parents and asking them to come retrieve their children.

“The juveniles were seated on the sidewalk, while awaiting pickup, admonished and advised not to return to the property,” Jarosz said.

Deputies searched the theater to ensure no one else was hiding inside. They were also looking for weapons, but no firearms were found.

No injuries were reported during the incident, authorities said.

The Burbank Theater opened in 1951 before shuttering in 2000, SFGate reports. It spent some of its time as an adult movie theater, and more recently the site has been considered for a housing development, the outlet added.

The Independent has contacted the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office for more information.
