Check your pantry: Multiple sugar products have been recalled due to potential contamination.
Target Corp. issued the voluntary recall notice last month after it was discovered that the sugar products may contain wheat kernel, an allergen not listed on the packaging. Wheat is one of the nine major food allergies designated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall was then classified by the FDA earlier this week, signifying that consuming the sugar could have “health consequences.”
Sold under the United, Good & Gather and Crystal Sugar brands, a combined 1.7 million pounds of light brown and powdered sugar packages have been affected, per the FDA’s recall notice.
The recall includes 50-pound bags of United Light Brown Sugar, two-pound bags of Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar, 50-pound bags of United 6X Powdered Sugar, 25-pound bags of Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar, and two-pound bags of Good & Gather Powdered Sugar.
The packages, both consumer and commercial-sized, were shipped to Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
A list of retailers carrying the affected sugar packages wasn’t included in the FDA’s recall notice.
The sugar recall is the latest to affect consumers. Earlier this week, pasta sold at Walmart locations across the country was recalled due to potential listeria contamination.
New York-based Gias Foods recalled two lots of bettergoods brand Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine.
Frozen in 22-ounce bright yellow packages, the products have the UPC number 194346442706 with lot numbers L6079C or L6080C. The affected items have expiration dates of September 19, 2027, or September 20, 2027.
So Delicious ice cream was also recently recalled. The brand’s manufacturer, Danone USA, issued a voluntary recall after it was discovered that foreign materials including “small stones and other hard objects” could be in certain pints, according to a notice issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
So Delicious Dairy Free Salted Caramel Cluster Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert is the only flavor that has been affected. However, the recall includes all pints with best-by dates on and before April 3, 2028.
Affected pints are labeled with the SKU 136603 and UPC 744473476138.
The ice cream was shipped to retailers nationwide and have been sold at Target and Walmart, among other retailers.
In a statement to The Independent, a Danone USA representative confirmed that the recall “is limited to this one product. No other So Delicious Dairy Free codes, flavors or products are affected.”
