NCP car park 'chaos' as '200' drivers stuck in city centre

A city centre street descended into chaos as tailbacks were seen backing onto a busy junction.

The barriers at the Pall Mall NCP car park broke this morning leading to cars queuing down Pall Mall and onto Leeds Street just before 9am today (Tuesday, September 20). One driver told the ECHO that the tailbacks were so bad it caused between 150 and 200 cars to sit at a standstill for more than an hour.

The queues stretched down Pall Mall and all the way down to the junction with the A59, with the car park being used by hundreds of people. The upper part of the car park holds 350 spaces alone.

He said: "I finally got in but queued from 8:30am-9:45am. The queue was 150-200 deep back down to the bottom of Leeds St where it meets Scotland Road. It was genuine chaos.

"My colleague tried to cut down Old Hall St to the back entrance to the car park and that just left Old Hall St at standstill, she was 25 minutes late for work too, it must have made 100s of people late for work today."

Since the problems, an NCP spokesperson confirmed that an engineer was en route earlier today. They said: "NCP has said that a member of staff is on route to help and that they apologise for the inconvenience. They hope to resolve this as soon as possible."
