'NCIS' Star Rocky Carroll Addresses Shocking Death of His Beloved Character in 500th Episode

'NCIS' reached its historic 500th episode and left fans with a major shocker. While such milestones are usually reserved for celebration, the long-running procedural instead delivered a devastating blow by killing off Director Leon Vance in a twist that stunned even its most devoted viewers.

Rocky Carroll has portrayed Director Vance for nearly two decades, so the character's exit was unexpected and left fans reeling. Now, as the dust settles on the character's final stand, the actor has opened up about why he felt it was the right time to say goodbye.

How Rocky Carroll Came To Terms With Leon Vance's Exit

Processing the death of a character one has inhabited for 18 years is no small feat, yet Carroll approached the transition with a sense of professional closure. He noted that in the world of television, longevity on this scale is rare and eventually demands a significant conclusion.

Carroll recounted the moment he learned about his beloved character's ending. He told People that executive producer and showrunner Steve Binder spoke to him in November about the 500th episode. Binder told him that they wanted 'to do something big,' something that would shock their audience, and 'turn the NCIS universe upside down.'

Binder gave him the storyline and revealed, 'In the process of saving the agency, Director Vance loses his life. It's a great story.' Carroll said he had an 'out-of-body experience' after learning his character's fate and asked to take a moment to 'process the whole thing.'

Aside from acting, Carroll was involved in directorial work on the franchise. He has directed 28 episodes, which led to a closer rapport with the crew and made his last scene 'incredibly emotional on set.'

'So my relationships with the crew run a lot deeper. All the guys, camera, lighting, sound, I know all these guys on a deeper level, because I also direct. So, yeah, it was very emotional,' Carroll added.

Carroll was satisfied with how they wrapped up Director Vance's storyline, with Binder telling him it was 'a love letter to your character.'

'"It's going to be a tribute to Vance." And when we finished it, I said, "I think we accomplished that,"' the actor shared.

'The Only Thing That Surprised Me' About Leaving NCIS

Carroll first stepped into the role of the toothpick-chewing director in 2008, initially as a recurring presence before becoming a series cornerstone. For 18 seasons, Vance served as the steady hand guiding the Major Case Response Team through international crises and internal upheaval.

Aside from learning about his character's fate, Carroll was shocked to realise he had only two more episodes to film before his final shoot. But surprisingly, he came to terms with it easily.

'The only thing that surprised me more than being told what the storyline was, was how quickly I was able to come to terms with it and be okay with it,' Carroll shared. 'I guess the director and the creative in me, my response was, "Really, that is actually a great story. It's a terrific story."'

Social Media Reacts To The 500th Episode Shock Twist

The shocking twist sent shockwaves across social media, where the 'NCIS' fanbase is famously vocal. Viewers who had tuned in for a commemorative episode were instead met with a tragedy that few saw coming.

The digital response was a mix of genuine grief over the loss of a beloved character and frustration over the sudden departure of a franchise pillar. Many fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disbelief, with one viewer stating they were 'completely shocked' by the turn of events.

However, the move also sparked a debate regarding spoilers, as news of the death began trending almost immediately after the East Coast broadcast. Some users were quick to reprimand those posting details without warnings, though the sheer scale of the event made it difficult to avoid the headlines.

As Carroll prepares for his next chapter, the impact of Leon Vance's leadership will likely be felt for seasons to come. While he may be moving on from the role, the actor leaves behind a legacy as the longest-serving director in the show's history.
