The Harvey City Council elected an acting mayor one month after the death of Mayor Christopher Clark.
Ald. Shirley Drewenski (1st) was unanimously selected during Monday’s city council meeting and was sworn in to serve the remainder of Clark’s term through next year.
Drewenski had previously been sworn in as mayor pro tempore after Clark’s death. Her appointment comes after two prior council votes ended in ties. A majority vote is required for the appointment.
"I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty to the residents of Harvey. Our focus remains on stability, transparency, and continuing the work of city government while honoring the legacy of Mayor Christopher Clark," Drewenski said in a statement.
"This is a time for unity and respect. I am committed to working collaboratively with the City Council, city staff, and our community to ensure continuity in leadership and service. Above all, we will continue to keep Mayor Clark’s family in our thoughts as we move forward together."
Clark died Jan. 30 and had served as mayor for six years. The cause of his death has not been revealed.
A memorial service will be held for Clark on March 28, according to the city.
