The NBA has redesigned its major end-of-season awards, changing the trophy designs and naming several honors after NBA legends. No prize is more significant than the new Michael Jordan Trophy, which will be given to the regular-season MVP each year.
The new trophy has been designed meticulously with several tributes to Jordan’s incredible accomplishments. The trophy stands 23.6 inches and weighs 23.6 pounds, in honor of Jordan’s number and collection of NBA championships. The base of the trophy has five sides to represent his five league MVP awards, and the crystal ball he’s holding in the trophy has 23 points.
The NBA also introduced the renamed Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy for the defensive player of the year, the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy for the rookie of the year, the John Havlicek Trophy for the sixth man of the year, the George Mikan trophy for the most improved player, and a new Jerry West trophy, which will be awarded to the “clutch player of the year” for the first time in 2023.
